In my early years living with chronic illness, I remember feeling so very alone. As I began to share my story, I realized how many other women—and men—were out there who, like me, faced challenging diseases that either lacked a cure or clear-cut treatments, had progressive stages of severity or periods of remissions and relapses, and frequently baffled even the best of physicians with both diagnosing and treatment options.
More than anything, we have been crying out for support. Someone to really hear us. Someone to be our cheerleader. Someone to help us learn to really listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us: get more sleep, make more time for the right kind of exercise for your body, find food that energizes and sustains us, dump the toxic relationships, discover a job that doesn’t drain your time, energy and soul, surround yourself with positivity, find pockets of time to do the things you love that fill you with joy.
Deep down, YOU know what your body is really craving. You instinctively know the way to good health—if only you had a map and a guide.
The good doctors do their job well. We are lucky to get 15 to 30 minutes of one-on-one time with our doctor to discuss lab results, ask questions, share concerns and discuss any of the latest findings or research. But unfortunately doctors lack the time or ability to truly counsel us and give direction in between visits.
The great news is that you don't have to go on this journey alone—if you have a health counselor. You can do it with someone who has shared your present struggles, who is there to support, encourage and inform you every step of the way.
